Civic Engagement and Volunteering

The City of Sierra Madre relies on residents who are willing to contribute their time, skills, and energy to help build a safe, welcoming, and engaged community. Volunteering offers residents an opportunity to support City programs, learn about local government, meet new people, and make a meaningful impact while developing valuable skills.

Volunteer opportunities are available across multiple City departments, and placements are based on community needs, applicant interests, and availability.

Volunteer Application Process

Individuals interested in volunteering with the City will participate in an initial department interview. During this process, the department volunteer coordinator will assess the applicant’s interests, skills, and availability and discuss current volunteer opportunities.

After the interview, applicants may be referred to one or more departments based on fit and availability.

Screening and Requirements

Depending on the volunteer position, applicants may be required to complete additional screening before acceptance.

Requirements may include:

  • A formal screening process
  • Contacting a minimum of two references
  • Fingerprinting (for certain positions)
  • A criminal background check, when applicable

Once accepted, volunteers receive a general orientation and department-specific training.

Age Requirements

Volunteer applicants under 18 years of age must:

  • Obtain parental or guardian consent
  • Submit a signed Waiver and Release of Liability with their application
