West Carter Avenue Road Closure

Begins the Week of August 24, 2026

Beginning the week of August 24, West Carter Avenue will be closed within the active construction area beginning at North Grove Street. The North Grove Street/West Carter Avenue intersection will be closed.

The intersections of West Carter Avenue with Oak Crest Drive and North Lima Street will remain open. North Lima Street will also remain open.

The initial closure is expected to last approximately four to five weeks for water main installation. Additional traffic restrictions may be required during subsequent storm drain work.

Athens Observed Holidays

Collection is delayed by one day following these observed holidays:

If an observed holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, collection service is not delayed.

Free Compost Giveaways

The City and Athens Services offer free compost giveaway opportunities for Sierra Madre residents. Events are self-service, and residents should bring sturdy containers suitable for transporting compost.

Holiday Tree Recycling

Athens collects holiday trees beginning the day after Christmas through the second week of January on normal collection days.

  • Remove stands, ornaments, lights, and tinsel.
  • Place the tree next to your regular containers.
  • Cut trees longer than 6 feet in half.
  • Flocked trees and trees treated with fire retardant are not accepted for recycling.
