Yard Sales

A permit is required to hold a garage or yard sale in Sierra Madre. Permits are issued in person at City Hall and are valid for up to two consecutive days per sale.

  • Permits are issued at City Hall, Monday–Thursday, 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

  • The permit fee is $20 and must be submitted in person.

  • A garage or yard sale may be held at the same address up to three times per calendar year.

  • Sales may be conducted between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

  • All goods offered for sale must belong to the owner, tenant, or occupant of the residence.

  • The resale of new merchandise for profit is not permitted.

  • Permits must be posted in a conspicuous location at the sale site, with the receipt attached.

If you are unable to hold your sale on the permitted dates due to rain or another issue, please contact City Hall at (626) 355-7135 to reschedule.

  • Signs are not permitted on public property or within the public right-of-way, including trees, light or utility poles, traffic control devices, or similar structures.

  • Signs may not be posted before 6:00 a.m. on the day of the sale and must be removed by 8:00 p.m. on the final day of the sale.

  • Signs posted outside of permitted times may be removed by the City, and the permit holder may be charged for removal.

Allowed signage:

  • One sign, no larger than 2½ ft. × 2½ ft., may be placed on a stake in the parkway directly in front of the sale location.

  • One sign, no larger than 2½ ft. × 2½ ft., may be placed on or inside a parked vehicle on the street.

  • A maximum of four vehicles may be used for advertising, with one sign per vehicle.

  • Signs may not be placed in the street or block sidewalks.

If you plan to hold a garage or yard sale, be sure to obtain your permit in advance. Sales conducted without a permit are subject to fines.
